What Is an AI Marketplace? Types and How They Work

An AI marketplace is an online platform where businesses find, compare and buy AI models, datasets, tools and services. Here is how they work and how companies sell data.

Short answer

An AI marketplace is an online platform where businesses find, compare and buy AI-related products. Those products can be prebuilt models, datasets, evaluation tools, AI agents or services. Buyers use one place to see their options and agree terms, and sellers reach buyers they would not easily find alone.

Gartner describes AI models marketplaces as platforms that help organizations discover, evaluate and access prebuilt models from several providers (Gartner).

The main types of AI marketplace

The word covers several kinds of platform. They sell different things to different buyers.

TypeWhat is tradedWho uses itExample in the sources

The term also appears in plain glossaries. Datalere describes an AI marketplace as a forum for buying and selling reusable data science models and algorithms, such as image recognition, and says it goes beyond open source (Datalere).

How an AI marketplace works

Most marketplaces do four things:

  1. List what sellers offer, with descriptions and terms.
  2. Match buyers with sellers based on need, budget and technical fit.
  3. Evaluate the product, often with trials, samples or benchmarks.
  4. Transact, through a license, subscription or fee.

Defined.ai describes the same steps for enterprise buyers, with added focus on licensing, privacy and where data came from (Defined.ai). For a buyer, the key question is whether they can verify what they are getting and what rights they receive.

Why the market is growing

Estimates of the size of AI spending vary, so compare sources carefully. Statista puts the market for AI technologies at around 255 billion U.S. dollars in 2025, and expects it to grow well beyond that (Statista). Explodingtopics gives a global AI market value of approximately 391 billion dollars (Exploding Topics). Dittofi expects the AI market to exceed 400 billion dollars by 2027 and credits AI marketplaces with making models and tools easier to access (Dittofi).

The common thread is demand for training and testing material. Models need data that reflects real work, and that is where data marketplaces come in.

Data marketplaces and selling company data

A data marketplace can be a place where a company licenses records it already holds. Smelted works this way. It is a free matching service that connects companies with AI data buyers. The company keeps ownership of its records. It licenses a copy, chooses what is included and which buyers it meets, and names, contact details and IDs are removed before anything is shared.

The records that matter are internal business files, such as:

  • support tickets
  • CRM history
  • standard operating procedures
  • project files
  • code
  • CAD drawings
  • lab data

Smelted serves owners, founders and C-level leaders at US companies with 50 to 500 employees (labs 30 to 500), founded in 2022 or earlier. The core industries are staffing and recruiting, engineering and architecture, B2B software and science labs or biotech R&D. The record systems that help most include Zendesk, Jira or GitHub, Salesforce or HubSpot, Bullhorn, AutoCAD or Revit, and Benchling.

How the process works

  1. Fill in the form. It takes about two minutes and collects headcount, tools and history at smelted.ai/get-started.
  2. Get matched. Smelted finds which buyers fit your company, gives a ballpark range, and introduces you to two or three matching buyers.
  3. Review a sample. A buyer reviews a sample before any value is settled. The sample is the first point where a real number is available.
  4. Approve or decline. You approve every buyer. Nothing is shared without your approval.
  5. Get paid. Buyers' payment terms usually run a few weeks to two months after signing. Plan on one to three months from first call to payment.

The buyer pays Smelted's fee. The company pays nothing, and there is no fee unless you close.

What affects the value

Value depends on headcount, years of records and how connected the data is. Records that link to each other, such as tickets tied to customers and projects tied to code, are usually worth more than isolated files. Smelted does not quote a dollar figure before a buyer has reviewed a sample. The form tells Smelted what a company has, and the sample review shows what a buyer will pay for it.

Small companies

If your company has under 30 employees, be aware that the buyers who take smaller companies generally pay less. Contact Chris at 954-682-7560 to talk about your situation.

FAQ

What is an AI marketplace?

An AI marketplace is a platform where organizations find, evaluate and buy AI products such as models, datasets, tools and agents. It lets buyers compare options from several sellers in one place.

Is the AI market making money?

Spending is large and growing. Statista puts the market for AI technologies at around 255 billion U.S. dollars in 2025 (Statista). Revenue for any one seller depends on its product and buyers, so the market total does not tell you what your own company can earn.

How do you sell your data to AI companies?

You can license anonymized records through a data marketplace or a matching service. Start by confirming that you hold records you can legally share, then remove names, contact details and IDs. Smelted handles matching and introductions. You choose what is included and approve each buyer. The first step is the two-minute form at smelted.ai/get-started.

How much money do companies get for selling their data?

It depends on headcount, years of records and how connected the data is. Smelted does not give a dollar figure in advance. Buyers review a sample first, and that review sets the value. Companies with 50 or more employees can book a quick call at calendly.com/smelted/intro-call, or use the form instead.

Next step

If you run a company with 50 to 500 employees and use the tools listed above, the form at smelted.ai/get-started is the quickest start. If you have 50 or more employees and prefer to talk first, book a call at calendly.com/smelted/intro-call.
